Solana Rent Refund: Reclaim Excess SOL
Solana users with older token accounts may have excess SOL available to reclaim after the network lowered its storage-deposit requirement. The first step of the reduced-rent upgrade is active. A wallet’s result depends on its eligible accounts, and some wallets will have nothing to recover.
The opportunity returns SOL already held in account deposits. It is not a uniform new-token distribution. The five-stage plan targets a 90% reduction overall, but the first active cut is about 9%; the full reduction has not launched.
About the Upgrade
Solana requires accounts to maintain a balance for the data they store. Its reduced-rent upgrade lowers that requirement in separately activated stages. Existing accounts can hold more than the new minimum, while later activations depend on the network’s rollout decisions.
Solana’s official reclaim guide describes an instruction that withdraws surplus lamports from supported token accounts, mints, and multisigs while leaving the account open. Custom program accounts require their own program support. A wallet balance alone does not establish eligibility.
Step-by-Step Guide for the Solana Rent Refund
- Read the official guide: Start with Solana’s reclaim documentation. It explains the mechanism for wallet services and developers rather than providing a one-click claim portal.
- Choose a supported interface: One third-party option is Overfunded. Its Keep Open mode scans token accounts for excess rent and displays the receiving wallet and fees. The service says it charges 5% of successfully recovered SOL, in addition to network transaction costs.
- Review the scan: Confirm the eligible accounts, destination, amount returned, and fees. An empty result is possible. Keep Open and Close Empty are different actions; closing an account removes it.
- Review the wallet request: If you decide to proceed, inspect the transaction before signing. Never provide a recovery phrase. Overfunded is a third-party service, not an official Solana tool, and using it involves application and transaction risk.
- Check later rollout changes: Follow Solana’s reduced-rent status page. Further activations may create additional surplus; a planned schedule is not a guaranteed activation date.
